The addax, an antelope native to the Sahara,
disappeared from Egypt in the mid 20th century, when
hunters finished off the few remaining small herds. In
pharaonic period these handsome animals were
tethered and kept for display as status symbols. Wild giraffes lived in Egypt up the drying climate drove
them southwards into the sub-Saharan regions. The Arabian Oryx once lived wild in Egypt and survived
in the Sinai peninsula until the 1970s. These medium-sized antelopes have been successfully reintroduced in
Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
