word “mau” signified cat. The Alexandrine Parakeets,
actually medium-sized parrots, were first brought to
Egypt from India by Alexander the Great. Hence their
name. Many were released at the opening of the Giza
Zoo in the late 19th century and now well established
in Egypt, have moved on to Europe.
