Herds of hartebeests, a medium-sized antelope,
roamed the savanna regions of Egypt during the Stone
Age and later, in Pharaonic times, were kept as
livestock. The animal became extinct in Egypt in the
early 20th century, but several subspecies survive iin
other African countries. During the Stone Age gerenuks, also know as giraffe
gazelles, grazed in the savanna regions of Egypt. Now
wild populations still survive in several East African
countries. Their distinctive long necks enable them to
reach high vegetation and survive for long periods
without water. Zebras lived in Egypt up until the Neolithic period when
the grasslands and savanna regions of the Sahara dried
up and became desert.
