Safar Khan Zamalek was established in 1966 by Roxane Petredis and the gallery itself was designed by Nabil Ghali. It started as an antique shop selling Islamic art works. Slowly, it started introducing prominent Egyptian artists of the time mainly: Ragheb Ayad, Hamed Nada, Abdel Hadi El-Gazzar, Nahmia Saad and some of the younger generation.

At the beginning of the 1980's, exhibitions were held on site and were inaugurated by the late minister of culture Badr El-Din Abu Ghazi who was also the most prominent art critic of his time. Exhibitions were mainly centered around the two artistic giants Ragheb Ayad and Hamed Nada. Ayad's successful exhibitions delt with a) life's architecture and the environment of monasteries and b) the sacred relationship between the land of Egypt, its animals and its people. As for Nada, his exhibitions delt with a) his world of symbolism and b) the architecture of old Cairo / Gamalyia where he used to have his studio in the monumental Islamic house "Messafer Khana".

In 1995 the owner of Safar Khan decided to dedicate the gallery’s focus to exhibiting modern Egyptian artists. Safar Khan's goal has been, and still is a) to establish a link between great Egyptian art and art lovers and the many pedestrians that inhabit Zamalek. This educative goal was achieved by searching and consequently exhibiting the pioneers of modern Egyptian art like Gamal El-Segini, A.H. El-Gazzar, Youssef Sida, H.Nada, Salah Abdel Kerim, Al Hussein Fawzi, Hamed Abdallah, Zakaria El-Zeiny and foreign artists who later became Egyptian like Yervand Demerdjian and b) to revive forgotten great artists like Saad El-Khadem, Effat Naghi, Kamal Khalifa, Shaaban Zaki, Sami Rafie, Zohra Efflatoun and Nahmia Saad.

Besides the pioneers of modern Egyptian art, Safar Khan offers monthly exhibitions of prominent contemporary artists like Mamduh Amar, Gazbia Serry, Nazli Madkhour, Leila Izzet, Saleh Reda, Anna Boghigiuan and Raouf Raafat. In addition, the Gallery has successfully introduced Egyptians living abroad like Katherine Bakhoum who has been living in France for the past 25 years. She carries in her art the roots of her country and the civilization of north Africa. She exhibits yearly at Safar Khan and in Paris.
