Safarkhan proudlypresents the latest collection for esteemed Egyptian - French artist and Safarkhan mainstay, Katherine Bakhoum, who features her latest collection under the theme ‘Le Carnaval’ from October30th to November 20th 2018. In her 15thshowing at Safarkhan, Bakhoum tries her talented hand at somethingcomparatively new and refreshing this time, with smaller more intimately sizedpaintings in contrast to her usually expansive canvases. Bakhoum’s artisticstyle is a marriage of her multicultural upbringing, which saw her spend herchildhood years in Egypt, before moving to her also-native France later on. Inthis showing we see her characteristic realism in abundance yet again, thistime exploring a theme that is also a new domain for her artistically, that ofthe colorful world of festivals, carnivals and circuses.

Bakhoum is renownedabove all as an expert colorist, with the talent for combining diverse hues andworking her palette in magnificent taste in ways that few other artists canmaster. There are dreamy landscape vistas, and intriguingly dressed characters setamidst detailed stylized bordering and backgrounds full of new decorativepatterns, adding an unmistakable third dimension to her work. This is a specialfacet of this collection, framing the artwork within the canvas itself in complementaryand thematic elements. Some of these offer the sensation as though she is brushingoff the dust collected by time and unveiling the picturesque vision of a longlost memory to us.

This collectionshowcases a celebration of movement and dance, highlighting the beauty ofperformance art in a sensitive and experimental way. Bakhoum directs ourattention with intuitive and detailed brushstrokes to the flowing garments andcostumes of her subjects. There is a concerted effort to depict stage-wear inall its grandiosity, typically one of the striking aspects of Bakhoum’s art,and this collection is no exception. We often see billowing dresses with ornateembellishments, dancers and performers resplendent in clothing that seamlesslyblends with the patterns and aesthetics of their backgrounds, created through aspecial canvas treatment using layering and mixed media. Overall, this is anotherstunning effort from Bakhoum, this time with new key facets.
